The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has allocated K445,340 to Sikongo Town Council to implement Phase Two of the Cash for Work program.

Commencing on 18th July 2026, the program is expected to benefit approximately 700 residents in the month of July, 2026 across the district and the beneficiaries will be paid K600 for every 10 days worked.

And to ensure a smooth rollout, the Council is deploying data entry clerks to all 14 wards to conduct beneficiary recruitment and verify data for eligible participants.

The scope of work will include:
Construction of temporary housing infrastructure, rehabilitation and matainance of access roads and footpath, general cleaning and landscaping of common areas, collection of solid waste from illegal disposal sites, land preparation for community gardens, clearing of livestock corridors among other identified works.

Meanwhile, Sikongo Town Council Secretary Dr. Shimwanga Monde has appreciated government for extending the initiative to Sikongo District and said the program will address both unemployment and key service delivery gaps in the district.

“The Cash for Work program creates local employment and uplifts livelihoods for Sikongo residents,” Dr. Shimwanga stated.
