Sikongo Town Council Social Welfare Department has distributed support packages to Seven (7) former inmates, marking a significant step in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The packages contained essential farming inputs such as vegetable seeds, blankets, and bags of mealie meal, designed to support beneficiaries in rebuilding their lives and contributing productively to their communities. In addition, the former prisoners will be connected to the Community Development Farmer Support Program, further strengthening their reintegration and economic participation.

Sikongo District Commissioner, Mr. Imbuwa Mwalye, officiated at the handover ceremony. In his remarks, he urged the ex-prisoners to embrace their freedom responsibly and use the skills acquired during incarceration to improve their livelihoods. He emphasized that the government’s gesture was a way of welcoming them back into society, encouraging them not to feel stigmatized.

“The time you spent in prison was a rehabilitation process to help you repent and learn from your mistakes. Now that you are free, we expect you to be responsible citizens who will contribute positively to the community,” Mr. Mwalye said.
Meanwhile, the Sikongo District Police Officer-in-Charge, Assistant Superintendent, Mwanagala Mufungulwa, advised the beneficiaries to avoid activities that could lead them back to prison. He assured them of police support whenever needed, reinforcing the importance of staying on the right path.

One of the recipients, Mr. Pelekelo Simangolwa, expressed gratitude on behalf of the group. He commended the government for prioritizing their safety and sustainability during the reintegration process, noting that the assistance would help them settle back into the community.
