Following the appointment of the Technical Committee on Drafting Amendments to the Constitution of Zambia by His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema, Sikongo District participated in the Western Province Virtual Public Sitting to present its submissions.

The Committee’s mandate is to engage citizens in reviewing and benchmarking best constitutional practices, proposing amendments aimed at strengthening democracy and constitutionalism, ensuring equitable and balanced representation, and promoting inclusivity, accountability, and effective governance.

This afternoon, a delegation led by Sikongo District Commissioner Mr. Henry Mwalye Imbuwa, Council Chairperson Mr. Kennedy Simbotwe and Acting Sikongo Town Council Secretary Mss. Maimbolwa Kalaluka, and other stakeholders convened at Sipopa Conference Hall, Sikongo Council Lodge.

Submissions were presented through Mr. Mwangala Sikongo, alongside Mr. Kalengesa and Mr. Naluchana Sepiso and Mss.Nalishuwa Mwala, among the submissions made include:

• Constituency delimitation: A proposal was made to delimit Sikongo Constituency, citing its vast geographical size as a barrier to equitable development across the district.

• Definition of a Child: Recommendation to define a child as anyone aged 0–17 years to help curb early marriages and teenage pregnancies.
• Election Petition Period: Suggestion to extend the timeframe for filing election petitions from 14 to 30 days to enhance fairness and judicial efficiency.
• Abolishment of By-Elections: Call to eliminate by-elections due to their significant financial burden on the national treasury.
• Women and People with Disability representation: A call for increased representation of women and persons with disabilities in governance structures.
