Sikongo Town Council has contributed K30,000 to support community sports during the district’s Independence Football Tournament, held to mark Zambia’s 61st Independence Day. The funding aims to promote grassroots football and encourage youth participation in sports.

The tournament brought together teams from different wards, showcasing local talent and community spirit. In the men’s category, teams included Nene Young Boys, Zesco (Licha Ward), and Lulangunyi. For women’s football, Sikongo Boarding School and Sikongo Queens competed.

In the third-place playoff, Tuuwa defeated Nene Young Boys 2-0. The men’s final saw Zesco scoop out Lulangunyi 2-1 to claim the championship. In the women’s final, Sikongo Boarding School beat Sikongo Queens 1-0, emerging as the 2025 Independence Champions.

Representing the District Commissioner at the event, Sikongo District Administration Officer Mr. Kingsley Kalunga highlighted the value of sports in building unity and empowering youth. “This contribution is not just about football-it’s about building a stronger, healthier, and more united Sikongo,” he said.

The K30,000 will go toward logistics, equipment, and prizes for participating teams, with part of the funds dedicated to supporting women’s football-a move praised by local leaders for promoting gender equality in sports.

The Independence Football Tournament has become a key part of Sikongo’s annual celebrations, blending patriotism with community engagement. With this year’s financial boost, the council hopes to encourage long-term investment in local sports.

Meanwhile, Sikongo District Sports Committee Chairperson Mr. Cleo Mpolomoka announced that the district has been selected to join the FAZ Division 3 league for the first time-a major milestone in local football development. He also revealed that two athletes, Namonda Kaungu (female) and Simasiku Simasiku (male), have been submitted for the upcoming Kabwe cross-country event, with training camp starting on October 25, 2025.

Mr. Mpolomoka appealed to stakeholders to support sports in the district, noting the urgent need for infrastructure and equipment to uplift local clubs and athletes.
