Sikongo District Commissioner Henry Mwalye, has disclosed that Sikongo District is now the most mechanised in terms of agriculture equipment among rural Districts in Western Province.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony of twelve motorbikes to successful applicants procured under the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, The District Commissioner expressed confidence that the District will perform well in forthcoming years in terms of agriculture production and other economic activities.
“In less than two years, Sikongo District has been a beneficiary of various empowerment ventures through Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission- CEEC, Sustainable Agriculture Finance Facility- SAFF and Farmer Support Program-FSP.
And now today, the Ministry of Youth has come on board with these motorbikes to be given to Youth groups and individuals in order to ease their mobility as they endure through their sources of livelihoods”. Said Mr. Mwalye.
Meanwhile youths have thanked government for the gesture and have implored district administration to push for more empowerments if the District is to realise its full potential in terms of economic development.
In his vote of thanks to government, one of the benefiting youths, Franco Nyambe, said many youths in Sikongo have been living in despair for a long time, and with continuation of such empowerments the hope of improved livelihoods will rejuvenate among young people in the District.
The motorbikes have been given on loan basis to be repaid over a period of three years, hence the youths have been urged to ensure that they care for them and fullfill repayment of the loan on each motorbike so that others may benefit as well.
